How to grow more with less
Most growth budgets go to the lowest-leverage lever there is.
Most owner-operators put nearly all their growth money into acquisition — ads, campaigns, agencies, more traffic. It's the most visible lever, the most expensive, and the one with the worst return.
Ranked by revenue produced per dollar of effort, the order runs pricing, then retention, then acquisition. Acquisition comes last. It takes most of the attention and most of the budget.
The leaky bucket
Acquisition without retention doesn't compound. You pay to fill a bucket that empties as fast as it fills — and because winning a customer costs more than keeping one, the arithmetic gets worse the more you spend. Weak retention isn't only a cost, it's a signal: it usually means the product or the experience isn't landing.
Retention is a design problem
Once someone becomes a customer, what keeps them is their experience of the thing — onboarding, the moment it first works, whether it stays worth paying for. That's product and experience design. Not how it looks. How it's conceived and specified.
That's why I lead with design: the layer that decides whether people understand your product, get value from it quickly, and stay.
Where AI actually helps
Generative and agentic AI, built and supervised properly, can produce content, synthesize data, generate code and design, and run the coordination work in between. It also drifts, makes mistakes, and degrades without a human watching it. Managed well, it does work that would otherwise be a hire or an agency retainer.
Growth by design. Accelerated by AI.
What that costs you
Not a salary, benefits, ramp, and a year of commitment. Not a monthly retainer for someone else's junior team. A fraction of either — pointed at the levers that actually move revenue.
If growth has flattened, or you're buying acquisition and it isn't compounding, book 30 minutes. I'll tell you which lever I'd pull first and why, whether or not you end up working with me.
